It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of our friend Hamadi Karembe, a lawyer in Bamako and former President of Avocats sans Frontières Mali.
We would like to express our friendship, esteem and affection for him, beyond his earthly existence.
We forged these bonds from the very beginning with our joint participation in the defence of the accused and victims of the Rwandan genocide; confronted with the unspeakable, we found ourselves in the same state of shock and with the same defensive reflexes.
Hamadi Karembe was the second President of ASF Mali, which was created at the end of 1997 under the aegis of the late Brahima Kone; it was therefore the second ASF to be created and we supported it so that it could be integrated into the ASF Monde, which was being created at the time, and later into the Avocats sans Frontières network.
This led to the development of an unshakeable friendship between our two associations, their directors and members, and enabled us to work together on numerous initiatives to help the most vulnerable, in which Hamadi Karembe played a prominent role before being succeeded by Mr Seydou Doumbia.
His commitment to the universal values of justice and freedom, his clarity of mind and his inexhaustible humour left their mark on all those who knew him, and he will be fondly remembered.
To his widow, his children and all his colleagues and friends, both in my own name and on behalf of ASF France and the ASF members of our Network, I offer our sincerest condolences and assure them of our desire to perpetuate his work in a spirit of fraternal collaboration.
