RESPECT - Building Civil Society Capacity for Effective Protection of Human Rights Conventions and Treaties

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The RESPECT project is the result of the consultation made by ASF France with the Guinean civil society and partners supporting the latter, which allowed to elaborate a precise mapping of past and current actions, to analyse the expertise and needs of civil society organisations (CSOs) and thus to identify specific needs.

This process led to the definition of an intervention strategy to enable a precise knowledge of the evolution of human rights and to support civil society and achieve significant changes in the State's respect for human rights. This project also echoes a human rights agenda driven by intensifying political tensions and Guinea's Universal Periodic Review which started in January 2020.

OBJECTIVES

  • Ensure close monitoring of human rights violations in Guinea in a context weakened by a political crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Strengthen the capacity of Guinean civil society in research and advocacy with national, international and UN authorities.

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • The human rights situation in Guinea, weakened by the COVID-19 crisis, is analysed and shared.

  • Guinean civil society is actively engaged in the promotion, protection and defence of human rights, and can ensure follow-up and complementarity in the implementation of specific UPR recommendations in Guinea.

ACTIONS IN 2021

  • Production of analyses by an external expert specialised in research and analysis of the human rights situation in Guinea. These analyses may confirm a specific state of affairs or be requested by the European Union Delegation with regard to health and socio-political developments.

  • Training of CSOs on different topics to understand the stakes of the most serious human rights violations, including reporting, advocacy techniques and referral and alert mechanisms to treaty bodies and coordination.

  • Support to human rights defenders and CSOs for the effective defence of human rights before the courts and competent authorities through the identification of tools and mechanisms.

FINANCIAL AND OPERATIONAL PARTNERS

The project is financed by the Delegation of the European Union in Guinea.
